I stumbled out of the yurt, blinking as my eyes adjusted to the change in lighting.
âZia, Zia,â I muttered under my breath. It had been a terrible excuse, especially since Zia found me whenever she wanted my companyâand I was hard-pressed to locate her otherwise.
Still, I needed to say something to get away, something that would keep Zoran from following along uninvited.
Not that it worked.
His footsteps sounded behind me as I traced my way back through the woods. Ugh. What was wrong with me? This handsome and popular guy was totally coming on to me and my first instinct was to run away? I could at least let him down gently.
I forced myself to stop and turned to face Zoran. He was my friend. I didnât need to run away from him. âHey,â I said as he caught up with me. âWhat was that in there?â
He smiled wide. âItâs how I feel. Youâre the prettiest girl at Darnborn by far. Why should I pretend youâre not?â
As he spoke, he moved in closer to me. I forced myself to remain still, strong. I wasnât prey. âI appreciate the compliment, but doesnât it feel kind of a sudden to you? One day weâre just friends, and the nextâ¦?â
âI guess I just finally recognized what was right in front of me.â He leaned in for a kiss, and I reared back.
âHey!â I warned, taking a giant step away from him. âI think thereâs been some miscommunication here. Iâm not interested in you like that.â
He didnât seem annoyed by my rejection. If anything, he seemed amused. âYou donât see it yet. Thatâs okay. You will.â Once again he leaned in for a kiss, and once again I darted away.
âWhy donât we go sit somewhere and talk this out?â Even as I said the words I knew it was a bad idea to spend any more time with him than I had to. What had started as an excuse became my lifeline. I need to find my tiger, before this escalated any further.
Zia! I screamed mentally. Zia!
âThe time for talking is over.â He didnât seem menacing as he spoke. In fact there was a giant grin on his face, and he appeared ecstatic, infatuated⦠not like himself. âWeâre in love now, and nothing will ever change that.â
He started for me once more, but this time a strong hand landed on his shoulder and pulled him back before he could reach me.
âWhatâs going on, man?â asked Owen as he positioned himself between Zoran and me.
I let out a giant sigh of relief. It wasnât Zia who had come to my rescue, but I was being saved all the same. Owen and Zoran were friends. If Zoran didnât believe my rejection, certainly heâd believe it from Owen.
âNothingâs going on, man. Iâm just having a nice talk with my girlfriend.â
âWhat?â Owen and I shouted at the same time.
Okay, this had gone too far. There was no room to dance around his feelings any longerâhe certainly wasnât considering mine. âI donât know whatâs going on, but Iâm not your girlfriend.
